Who Are We?

Los Vecinos de Buford Highway (The Neighbors of Buford Highway) is a 501c3 non-profit organization with a mission to cultivate community, magnify the voices of residents, and grow future leaders in the Buford Highway neighborhoods, to preserve the distinct quality of Buford Hwy.

We cultivate community by sharing dinner together in local apartment complexes and by helping to establish communication 1) between residents at individual apartment complexes and 2) between different apartment complexes along Buford Highway 3) between residents of apartments and the local service providers, schools, nonprofits, and government entities, we serve as a conduit of information and social capital.

We elevate leadership opportunities by providing basic “Know Your Right’s” trainings to residents. As trained "Apartment Captains" these volunteers act as first responders when predatory landlord practices arise at local apartments.

These amazing leaders are responsible for disseminating information coming into the community and calling their neighbors to action. The Apartment Captains work closely with other community leaders to gain leadership insights, training, and support.

We recognize that our community has an important voice that is oftentimes unheard. Los Vecinos helps to magnify the least heard voices by facilitating spaces for residents to gather which allows our neighbors to work together towards resident-based solutions. We do this by hosting quarterly gatherings of all apartment complexes and by engaging the local media, community leaders, government entities, and school officials all year round.

We operate by these principles:

Love your neighbor.

Be a good neighbor. Being a good neighbor is about knowing your neighbor and viewing them as an integral part of our community.

Honor all people.

Everyone is equally valuable to our community. Differences are not barriers to respect, they are an asset to be celebrated!

Share in all things.

Whether it's time, resources, social capital, or knowledge, we believe that sharing means you will be there when you have something that your neighbor does not.

Break bread together.

When we eat together, we spend time genuinely getting to know each other, and this is what keeps neighborhoods strong and vibrant.

There are many branches which make our team able to operate over 15 distinct programs. (Many department leaders overlap due to a lack of operational resources and love for community service.)
